This is the main and the most populous town between the five municipalities of Erice-inland. The other four are: Paceco, Custonaci, San Vito Lo Capo, Buseto Palizzolo. Valderice, surrounded by greenery, offers different landscapes: hills, wild ground for flora and fauna, clear beaches and reefs, unspoiled landscapes, everyone gives the beauty to the countryside, so it’s one of the most desirable resorts, especially in the summer. Its district includes three seaside suburbs: Bonagia, Lido Valderice and the Rio Forgia beach. The country is characterized by the typical Mediterranean climate, with cold winters because altitude is above sea level (almost 300 mt.). In winter rainfall is intense and in summer weather is quite hot and muggy. Hot winds can raise the temperature until 40° C, but with low humidity level.
Valderice, the town between “sky and sea” is only 8 km far from Trapani. In town there are several green spaces, such as the municipal pinewood, which is located top an hill where there are caves and an abandoned church.
Characteristic thing for the traditional rural culture are the country houses, so-called Bagli, they are old houses surrounded by parks and gardens, some of them are still in good condition: Baglio S. Croce, Baglio Sciare, Baglio Battiata, Baglio Nasellli in Bonagia, Baglio Pilati in St. Andrea, Baglio Magaddino in Chiesanuova, Baglio Tangi and Baglio Mafi in Rizzato district.
The several villas prove the presence of nobility and nesters: Villa Adragna, Villa Elena (also known as Villa Barone Stabile, and also as Villa Salerno-Barberi), Villa Pilati, Villa Adragna now Villa Bethania (psico-motor rehabilitation center for diasbled children), Villa Coppola Ragosia (the meeting point of plotters against the Bourbons), Villa Battiata, Villa Ancona, Villa Paparella, Villa Manzo, Villa Luppino at Ragosia. Moreover, there are several buildings among the wealth of the artistic heritage of Valderice: the sanctuary of Our Lady of Mercy (Misericordia), the church of Andrew Apostle, dating to 1164, in which they founded a gravestone of the third century A.D.; Holy Mary of Purity church, located in San Marco quarter, the church of Christ the King, commissioned by Father Francis Sanclemente and located in the center of the town, classified as the Mother Church and thus the largest and most popular of all, but it isn’t the more ancient (finished in 1950); other smaller churches, located in its villages: Molino Excelsior in Valderice (proof of industrial archeology); Tonnara (plant for tuna processing) of Bonagia (now it is Museum of Maritime Activities), belonged to the Burgarella family; the Santa Croce tower, old tower; Arc of Valderice, at the entrance of the town; they say that there was another near the Fico quarter, probably destroyed. At Valderice there are also different events that typify the town during the year: The musical and movie theatrical exhibition, inaugurated in 1993 so called Summer Valdericina, it is organized every year from July to September in the exclusive San Barnaba Theatre, engaging tourists, people of Valderice and hosting also many vips. The San Barnaba theatre is outdoor and it has more than 1000 seats on the concentric steps, and the circular stage,. It is located in the same name street, not far from the city center, including about 1860 mt² the in an ancient tuff quarry. The Carnival floats parade, in last 2010 it was 19th edition, and each year it put together thousands people from Sicily all over. The floats, by Styrofoam and papier-mache, are work of local artists who make available to people of Valderice their experience and their free time. The Carnival events go on any weeks often enough and they also involve neighbouring municipalities, because the Valderice Carnival is now the one celebrated in province. Every year in mid-April there is the chrono-climbing “Monte Erice”, at the 53rd edition last 2010, it summons people from Italy all over. In this race, the drivers, with their cars, are severely committed by curvy route, about 6 km long, from Valderice to finish line of Erice top. The May Day concert is in seaside resort of Lido Valderice since 1999, along the lines of the Rome Concert; local bands show their performance throughout the day, and there are also guests of national prestige, carrying up until 15.000 people.
Religious events for Christmas, Easter and Christ King Feast. In particular, felt is Nativity scene, as well as in all municipalities of Elimo-Erice land, (now that living scene of Misericordia district is in the 12th edition). The tuna fishing happened in May and June in the Tonnara of Bonagia and San Cusumano until 2003. The tuna-plant of Bonagia is toward north about 13 km. You Get off Valderice and continue for Bonagia (by the main road to Valderice, you turn left at a supermarket). Once in Bonagia you follow the signs to the Tonnara, easily identifiable because of the tower. The Tonnara (sixteenth century), was a real village: there were houses around a large central courtyard, these were places for tuna processing, the boathouse (now conference room, but still with two examples) and one chapel where the tuna fishermen gathered before going out to sea. The Saracen Tower had defensive and now it is a small Tonnara Museum showing tools both for the manufacture and repair of fishing boats and the first fish processing. On the second floor a model shows the long networks passage through which tuna had to go before arrive at the final thick net, called the Death-Room. Here they “finished" the cruel tuna fishing.
